Kamloops Affordable Housing Panel Discussion
To mark the International Day for the Elimination of Poverty the TRUSU Equity Committee will be hosting a panel discussion about the growing crisis in the real estate and rental markets in Kamloops and what we can do about it!
A variety of policy choices and market factors have resulted in a shrinking amount of affordable housing in Kamloops. With a rental vacancy rate of 1.1% and the average home costing $408,000, many working class people, seniors, students, and others can’t find affordable shelter. This is a growing problem across the country, with Statistics Canada reporting that 1 in 4 Canadian households (3.3 million) do not have affordable housing.
The discussion will break down how we got to where we are, the negative impacts unaffordable housing has on our community, and solutions we can implement to make housing in Kamloops more affordable for all.
