Open Textbooks: For Students

We know your textbooks are becoming more and more unaffordable. Open textbooks are the answer!

Open textbooks are FREE in digital form, and available in print for a small fee to cover the cost of printing. They’re also convenient and easy to use! They are available in multiple digital formats online or for download, meaning you won’t need to pack heavy books around campus. You have unlimited access with no access codes or expiry dates, and any downloaded versions are yours to keep for your whole academic career and beyond!

Petition for Open Textbooks at TRU

  • Because textbook prices are too high and growing faster than inflation, leaving many students without access to course materials and contributing to the unaffordability of post-secondary education;

    Because open textbooks are faculty-written, peer-reviewed, and made freely available under an open copyright license, providing student savings and customizable course material;

    Because the Thompson Rivers University Act requires TRU to “promote teaching excellence and the use of open learning methods” and the TRU Strategic Priorities 2015-2019 commits TRU to “promote access to open educational resources and learning”;

    I call on TRU to establish an Open Textbooks Fellowship to support the creation of open copyright educational resources by TRU faculty;

    I further call on TRU to encourage and support the adoption of open textbooks by faculty members wherever they are available and suitable for a course.
