Changes made at the institutional level directly impact students’ educational experience. Many students would like to be a part of decision-making at their university, but struggle to know how to get involved. While many valuable activities take place with the governance structures of the university. There are many projects or collaborations that exit is less formal spaces. Spaces harder to find on your own and with less support and resources. Together TRU works to bridge this gap by matching students with ongoing campus improvement projects that create positive change on campus.

Who Is Involved?

The Student Caucus is the primary body of students involved in engaging in institutional advocacy. The Caucus is made up of over 50 student representatives who apply each year to serve on a variety of TRU governance and advisory bodies. In addition to their roles within TRU decision-making, Student Caucus members can also choose to participate in a variety of Together TRU projects. Our institutional Together TRU partners can come from departments across the institution, in any place where there are faculty or staff interested in working together with students to improve the campus experience.

How Does Together TRU Work?

Every fall, students come together to identify opportunities to improve the campus experience. Once these opportunities have been identified, they are documented and a package that includes an outline of the opportunity, an introduction to the Together TRU program, and an overview of the Student Caucus is sent to potential partners across the institution.

TRU departments are asked to review the package and indicate whether they are interested in collaborating to develop a solution to take advantage of the opportunity. For each opportunity that a campus department expresses interest in addressing, a group of students from the Student Caucus will be assigned to work together with them. From there, the collaboration will meet to discuss potential solutions and advance the project.

In addition to seeking out potential Together TRU partners the Student Caucus is also always open to receiving proposals for potential projects from the campus community. In these instances a campus department can download a form from the Together TRU website. The department will outline the opportunity they believe exists and provide an overview of the commitment to work on the opportunity from their department in terms of people and resources. Once submitted the Student Caucus will review the submitted proposals and select those where there is interest and a group of students from the Student Caucus will be assigned to work together with them. From there, the collaboration will meet to discuss potential solutions and advance the project.
