SUMMARY:Beyond the Labels: Understanding Neurodiversity
DESCRIPTION:Conversations about neurodiversity are becoming more common\, yet many people still feel unsure about how to engage. As language continues to evolve\, it can be difficult to know what terminology to use or how to ask questions without worrying about getting it wrong. \nThis is a unique opportunity to learn from Kelly Bron Johnson\, which draws on both her professional expertise and lived experience as an Autistic and Hard of Hearing self-advocate to provide insight into the realities of neurodiversity in today’s society. Through personal stories\, research\, and practical examples\, she will explore what neurodiversity is\, challenge common misconceptions\, and examine some of the barriers neurodivergent people continue to encounter in schools\, workplaces\, and everyday life. \nWhether you’re a student\, professional\, leader\, or community member\, this lecture will offer a stronger understanding of neurodiversity\, a greater appreciation for the diversity of human experiences\, and practical ways each of us can contribute to more inclusive and accommodating communities. \nEvent Details\nLearn with us at this year’s EDI Lecture Series\, taking place in the TRU Clock Tower Theatre (CT T200) on Thursday\, October 29\, 2026. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.\, and the lecture will begin at 6:00 p.m. \nThis year’s lecture can be attended in person or online. For the best experience\, we encourage you to join us in person at the Clock Tower Theatre. If you are unable to attend in person\, including Open Learning students learning outside of Kamloops\, you are still welcome to take part by joining the lecture virtually. \nAdmission is free and open to all. In-person seating is limited to the first 200 people who register\, so be sure to secure your seat early. When registering\, please select the appropriate in-person or online ticket type to reflect how you plan to participate. \nEDI Lecture Series\nEach year the TRUSU Equity Committee hosts the Equity Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Lecture Series to bring the campus and broader community together to explore relevant and engaging topics in the world of EDI. We bring speakers\, free of charge\, to our campus with the aim to provide opportunities to engage on issues of social justice\, human rights\, and other critical EDI conversations. Growing and learning together is the mark of a community that is equipped to lead with understanding and respect for one another.   \nDon’t miss this opportunity to engage with an important topic that will inspire and guide the future of Neurodiversity understanding and inclusion in our community.

SUMMARY:Getting to Campus
DESCRIPTION:Getting to campus should be the easiest part of your day. But for many students\, unreliable transportation\, long travel times\, and limited transit options can make simply getting to class a challenge. \nPublic transit connects students to more than just campus. It provides access work\, healthcare\, and community life. The way transit systems are designed\, from route planning and service frequency to pricing and infrastructure\, can determine whether transit is a convenient choice or a barrier to opportunity. \nDrop by Student Street in Old Main from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and chat with the TRUSU Community Affairs Committee about how transit decisions are made\, what creates an accessible transit system\, and how transportation shapes the student experience in Kamloops. \nDiscover how reliable\, accessible transit can remove barriers\, explore the current state of transit access\, and help build a better understanding of how transportation connects students to education and community.

SUMMARY:Amnesty Urgent Actions Outreach
DESCRIPTION:Every day\, people around the world face violations of their internationally protected human rights simply for speaking out\, defending their communities\, or exercising their fundamental freedoms. While these situations can feel overwhelming\, there are meaningful ways to take action. \nThe TRUSU Amnesty Urgent Actions Program is one of those ways. \nThrough this initiative\, the TRUSU Equity Committee responds to 26 urgent human rights cases identified by Amnesty International by writing advocacy letters every 2 weeks to governments and decision-makers around the world. These letters call for immediate action to protect individuals at risk and uphold internationally recognized human rights. Together with millions of people participating in Amnesty International’s global movement\, these collective actions have helped secure justice\, protection\, and freedom for countless individuals. \nCome see the work we’ve been doing\nVisit the Equity Committee at our Amnesty Urgent Action outreach table to learn about the human rights cases we’ve responded to throughout the Fall 2026 semester. Explore the letters we’ve written\, discover the stories behind each case\, learn about successful outcomes from past urgent actions\, and speak with committee members about why these issues matter. \nWe’ll also show you how you can participate yourself. Whether you’ve never written an advocacy letter before or you’re interested in becoming more involved in human rights work\, we’ll walk you through the process and show you how simple it is to take action. \nDrop by for a few minutes or stay for a conversation. Learn about the human rights violations we’ve addressed this past semester\, discover how collective action creates real change\, and find out how you can become part of Amnesty International’s global movement for justice. \nTo explore all of the cases addressed through the TRUSU Amnesty Urgent Action Program\, visit our Amnesty Urgent Action webpage.
