SUMMARY:Level 1 Learn-to-Swim
DESCRIPTION:Swimming is not only a great way to stay healthy and fit—it’s also a vital life skill\, especially in a place like Kamloops\, home to over 100 lakes and rivers just an hour’s drive away. \nMany students at TRU want to enjoy these outdoor water activities—but not everyone knows how to swim. That’s why the TRUSU Services Committee has partnered with the Canada Games Aquatic Centre to offer Learn-to-Swim lessons exclusively for TRU students! \nSession Outline:\nThe October Learn-to-Swim Session will be a 5-weeks long (10-lessons) program and will cover the basics of swimming and pool safety protocols. The program starts on October 13th and runs until November 12th in the Canada Games Aquatic Centre within the Tournament Capital Centre. \nRegistration Options\nThere are two cohorts available to students with a max capacity of 6 participants in each cohort. SUMMARY:Signal for Help: Learn to Recognize and Respond
DESCRIPTION:The TRUSU Equity Committee invites you to learn about the Canadian Women’s Foundation’s Signal for Help campaign and how you can support someone experiencing abuse. Throughout November\, we’ll be connecting with students across campus to build awareness of the signal and share practical tools for responding in a supportive way.  \nWhat Is the Signal for Help? \nThe Signal for Help is a simple\, one-handed gesture someone can use to communicate that they need someone to safely check in and support them. It offers a way to reach out when speaking openly about abuse may not be possible.  \nThe gesture involves holding up one hand with your palm facing outward\, tucking your thumb into your palm\, and folding your fingers over your thumb.  \n \nRecognizing the signal is only the first step. Someone experiencing abuse may face barriers to asking for help\, including fear of judgment or concern for their safety. Knowing how to check in safely\, listen without judgment\, and follow their lead can help them feel supported.  \nThrough our Solidarity Actions Program\, TRUSU is amplifying this campaign by helping students recognize the signal and build confidence in supporting someone who may need help.  \nTake Action with Us \nThroughout November\, the Equity Committee will be visiting locations across campus to share information about the Signal for Help and how we can all play a role in responding to gender-based violence.  \nStop by one of our outreach tables to:  \n\nLearn to recognize the Signal for Help and understand what it means. \nExplore ways to check in safely and respond without judgment. \nLearn about gender-based violence and barriers to seeking support. \nFind out how to continue learning through the free Signal for Help Responder Mini Course. \n\nParticipate Online \nYou can also take part at your own convenience through the Canadian Women’s Foundation’s free Signal for Help Responder Mini Course.  \nThrough short\, interactive lessons\, you’ll learn about gender-based violence\, common misconceptions about abuse\, and ways to respond supportively when someone reaches out. Complete the course at your own pace and receive a certificate of completion after finishing all modules.  \nTake the Mini Course\n \nAbout TRUSU Solidarity Actions \nThis initiative is part of TRUSU’s Solidarity Actions Program\, which provides students with opportunities to support advocacy led by organizations working to advance equity\, human rights\, and social justice. Rather than creating our own campaigns\, we use this program to amplify existing initiatives by raising awareness\, encouraging meaningful action\, and connecting students with organizations leading this work.

SUMMARY:Getting to Campus
DESCRIPTION:Getting to campus should be the easiest part of your day. But for many students\, unreliable transportation\, long travel times\, and limited transit options can make simply getting to class a challenge. \nPublic transit connects students to more than just campus. It provides access work\, healthcare\, and community life. The way transit systems are designed\, from route planning and service frequency to pricing and infrastructure\, can determine whether transit is a convenient choice or a barrier to opportunity. \nDrop by Student Street in Old Main from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and chat with the TRUSU Community Affairs Committee about how transit decisions are made\, what creates an accessible transit system\, and how transportation shapes the student experience in Kamloops. \nDiscover how reliable\, accessible transit can remove barriers\, explore the current state of transit access\, and help build a better understanding of how transportation connects students to education and community.
