Breaking Bread is a project from the TRU Students’ Union that connects students with community leaders through small group discussions around shared topics of interest.

On January 27, 2020 the Students’ Union hosted Dara Johnson and seven students who exchanged ideas on “Social Justice in Healthcare.” Dara is a prenatal nurse who works at Royal Inland Hospital and has engaged in extensive community education with a focus on gender and trans issues in healthcare.

Questions considered by the group included:

• Thinking about vulnerable groups accessing healthcare, how do administrative processes impact people’s daily experiences and health?
• Do you have ideas about how forms, paperwork, computer systems, etc could be changed to help vulnerable populations access services?
• What are some of the barriers that trans people face in the healthcare system and/or in other institutions?
• How is age a factor in gender transition? Does age have implications when thinking about access to, or experiences within, healthcare for trans people?
• What are the privileges that you have when accessing healthcare or other services? In what ways is this visible or not?
• How does your experience differ in the healthcare system based on your privilege?
