On August 1, 2017 the TRU Students’ Union made its submission the 2018 federal budget consultation calling on the federal government to phase out the public investment in tuition tax credits and the Registered Education Savings Program and expand the Canada Student Grants program.
The federal Standing Committee on Finance (FINA) invites organizations to submit their priorities for the next federal budget each year. Following the receipt of the written submissions, the committee tours the country to receive public presentations on budget priorities from organizations that have made submissions.
“We are excited to make a strong case to the federal government on the need to expand need-based grants,” said Cole Hickson, Vice-President External. “Federal tax expenditures show that over $1.5 billion will be spent on tuition tax credits in 2018, that could otherwise be used to expand the value of the Canada Student Grants program.”
