Students Take Action to #WelcomeRefugees

During the first week of the semester, the TRUSU Equity Committee hand-billed, tabled, and participated in back to school events for Amnesty International’s Refugees Welcome Here! campaign in order to raise awareness about the ongoing refugee crisis and pressure the federal government to introduce faster timelines to reunify refugee families in Canada.

“The ongoing refugee crisis has captured the hearts and minds of Canadians and shone a spotlight on what we can do as individuals and as a society to help refugees,” said Chandan Sehgal, TRUSU International Students’ Representative. “While Canada has been making progress in better protecting refugees from conflicts around the world, there are areas like refugee family reunification where we can do better.”

The Committee spoke with hundreds of students, faculty, staff, and community members about the campaign, debunked some prominent myths about refugees, got petitions signed, and distributed a leaflet with information about more ways to get involved and help solve the refugee crisis.

The response to the campaign was extremely positive with the Committee quickly reaching its goal of 500 petition signatures!

The Committee will now pass these petitions on to Amnesty International for submission to the Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship John McCallum.

Thank you to everyone who signed a petition and got involved in the campaign!
