SUMMARY:Stand with First Nations: Support the Declaration Act
DESCRIPTION:The TRUSU Equity Committee invites you to join an online information session about British Columbia’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (Declaration Act) and the First Nations Leadership Council’s call for people across B.C. to stand with First Nations and oppose amendments to the legislation.  \nWhat is the Declaration Act? \nPassed unanimously in 2019\, the Declaration Act establishes the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UN Declaration) as the framework for reconciliation in British Columbia. The legislation requires the Province to work in consultation and cooperation with Indigenous Peoples to bring provincial laws into alignment with the UN Declaration and to develop and implement an action plan to advance its objectives.  \nThe Declaration Act marked an important commitment to recognizing and upholding the rights of Indigenous Peoples and building a more collaborative relationship between Indigenous Peoples and the Province.  \nWhy Are First Nations Calling for Action? \nFollowing recent court decisions concerning the Declaration Act\, the Province announced its intention to pursue amendments to the legislation.  \nThe First Nations Leadership Council has opposed amendments to the Declaration Act and is calling on the Province to uphold the legislation as it was originally co-developed with First Nations. Rather than changing the Declaration Act\, First Nations leadership is calling for the Province to focus on its meaningful and full implementation.  \nTRUSU is responding to this call through our Solidarity Actions Program by helping students learn about the issue and providing opportunities to stand with First Nations in support of the Declaration Act.  \nJoin the Online Information Session \nJoin the TRUSU Equity Committee online to learn more about the Declaration Act\, the events that have led to the current calls for action\, and how you can show your support.  \nDuring the session\, we will:  \n\nProvide an overview of the Declaration Act and its role in advancing Indigenous rights in B.C. \nExplore the recent events that have led First Nations leadership to call for action. \nAddress common questions and misconceptions about the Declaration Act. \nExplain how you can add your voice in support. \n\nVirtual Access\nThis session will take place online via Microsoft Teams. SUMMARY:Amnesty Urgent Actions Outreach
DESCRIPTION:Every day\, people around the world face violations of their internationally protected human rights simply for speaking out\, defending their communities\, or exercising their fundamental freedoms. While these situations can feel overwhelming\, there are meaningful ways to take action. \nThe TRUSU Amnesty Urgent Actions Program is one of those ways. \nThrough this initiative\, the TRUSU Equity Committee responds to 26 urgent human rights cases identified by Amnesty International by writing advocacy letters every 2 weeks to governments and decision-makers around the world. These letters call for immediate action to protect individuals at risk and uphold internationally recognized human rights. Together with millions of people participating in Amnesty International’s global movement\, these collective actions have helped secure justice\, protection\, and freedom for countless individuals. \nCome see the work we’ve been doing\nVisit our Amnesty Urgent Action outreach table at the Clubs Day and Community Fair to learn about the human rights cases we’ve responded to throughout the Summer 2026 semester. Explore the letters we’ve written\, discover the stories behind each case\, learn about successful outcomes from past urgent actions\, and speak with committee members about why these issues matter. \nWe’ll also show you how you can participate yourself. Whether you’ve never written an advocacy letter before or you’re interested in becoming more involved in human rights work\, we’ll walk you through the process and show you how simple it is to take action. \nDrop by for a few minutes or stay for a conversation. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 16th annual TRUSU Pride Parade as we celebrate\, strengthen community\, and demonstrate our shared commitment to creating a campus where 2SLGBTQIA+ students\, staff\, faculty\, and allies feel safe\, respected\, welcomed\, and seen. Pride is more than a celebration. It is an opportunity to recognize the ongoing contributions\, resilience\, and diversity of 2SLGBTIA+ communities while reaffirming our commitment to equity\, belonging\, and community. \nThe celebration begins at 10:00 a.m. with our Pride Resource Fair\, featuring campus services and Kamloops community organizations that support the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Stop by to discover local resources\, connect with organizations\, and learn about the services and opportunities available throughout the year. While you’re there\, stop by our Pride photo booth to capture the day with friends and show off your favourite Pride outfit.  \nAt 11:00 a.m.\, the parade officially begins as campus and community leaders welcome the crowd and help build excitement for the celebration ahead. DESCRIPTION:The TRUSU Equity Committee is excited to host an Equity Training on Mental Health and Supportive Conversations\, a free session designed for anyone looking to strengthen their understanding of mental health and build the confidence to support others in meaningful\, responsible ways. This training will be facilitated by experts from the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) – Kamloops Branch\, who bring extensive experience in community mental health education and psychological safety. \nThis interactive session will explore how mental health exists on a continuum and why psychological health and safety matter in campus environments. Whether you are a student\, staff member\, or community leader\, knowing how to respond when someone shares they are struggling is an essential skill. Participants will gain practical tools to navigate supportive conversations while recognizing the importance of boundaries\, self-awareness\, and equity in mental health discussions. \nIn this session\, participants will explore: \n\nUnderstanding Mental Health as a Continuum – recognizing that mental health exists on a spectrum and that experiencing challenges does not automatically mean someone has a mental illness.\nPsychological Health and Shared Responsibility – examining the role students\, staff\, and leaders play in creating safer\, more supportive campus environments.\nEquity and Mental Health – understanding how diversity\, inclusion\, and lived experience shape mental health outcomes and conversations.\nRecognizing Signs and Responding with Care – identifying subtle indicators that someone may be struggling and learning practical strategies for having supportive conversations.\nSustainable Support and Self-Care – maintaining boundaries\, following up appropriately\, and building resilience to prevent burnout.\n\nParticipants will leave with practical\, real-world tools they can apply in classrooms\, workplaces\, leadership roles\, and daily interactions. \nRegistration Details\nThis free training is available to the first 40 participants who complete the registration below. Space is limited to ensure meaningful discussion and engagement\, so be sure to secure your spot early.

DESCRIPTION:Join the TRUSU Equity Committee in donating gently used second-hand clothing to the Campus Clothing Exchange\, an initiative that provides free\, accessible clothing to TRU students who may need it most. This program helps students find the clothing they need\, such as\, professional attire\, without having to worry about the financial burden of buying new clothes. \nDrop-off Details:\nYou can drop off your donations at the TRUSU Building\, across from the Membership Services Desk\, anytime during weekdays (8 AM–10 PM) and weekends (10 AM–10 PM) throughout January.
