SUMMARY:Stand with First Nations: Support the Declaration Act
DESCRIPTION:The TRUSU Equity Committee is answering a call from the First Nations Leadership Council (FNLC) to stand with First Nations in support of British Columbia’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (Declaration Act) and oppose proposed amendments to the legislation.  \nWhat is the Declaration Act?\nPassed unanimously in 2019\, the Declaration Act establishes the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UN Declaration) as the framework for reconciliation in British Columbia. The legislation requires the Province to work in consultation and cooperation with Indigenous Peoples to bring provincial laws into alignment with the UN Declaration and to develop and implement an action plan to advance its objectives.  \nThe Declaration Act marked an important commitment to recognizing and upholding the rights of Indigenous Peoples and building a more collaborative relationship between Indigenous Peoples and the Province.  \nWhy Are First Nations Calling for Action?\nFollowing recent court decisions concerning the Declaration Act\, the Province announced its intention to pursue amendments to the legislation.  \nThe First Nations Leadership Council has opposed amendments to the Declaration Act and is calling on the Province to uphold the legislation as it was originally co-developed with First Nations. Rather than changing the Declaration Act\, First Nations leadership is calling for the Province to focus on its meaningful and full implementation.  \nTRUSU is responding to this call through our Solidarity Actions Program by helping students learn about the issue and providing opportunities to stand with First Nations in support of the Declaration Act.  \nTake Action with Us \nThroughout September\, the Equity Committee will be visiting locations across campus to share information about the Declaration Act\, why First Nations leadership is opposing amendments to it\, and how students can show their support.  \nStop by one of our outreach tables to:  \n\nLearn about the Declaration Act and its role in advancing Indigenous rights in B.C. \nLearn why the First Nations Leadership Council is calling for the Act to be upheld. \nWrite a message sharing why you stand with First Nations in support of the Declaration Act. \nAdd your voice to the FNLC campaign calling on the Province to uphold its commitments to Indigenous rights and reconciliation.

DESCRIPTION:Every day\, people around the world face violations of their internationally protected human rights simply for speaking out\, defending their communities\, or exercising their fundamental freedoms. While these situations can feel overwhelming\, there are meaningful ways to take action. \nThe TRUSU Amnesty Urgent Actions Program is one of those ways. \nThrough this initiative\, the TRUSU Equity Committee responds to 26 urgent human rights cases identified by Amnesty International by writing advocacy letters every 2 weeks to governments and decision-makers around the world. These letters call for immediate action to protect individuals at risk and uphold internationally recognized human rights. Together with millions of people participating in Amnesty International’s global movement\, these collective actions have helped secure justice\, protection\, and freedom for countless individuals. \nCome see the work we’ve been doing\nVisit the Equity Committee at our Amnesty Urgent Action outreach table to learn about the human rights cases we’ve responded to throughout the Fall 2026 semester. Explore the letters we’ve written\, discover the stories behind each case\, learn about successful outcomes from past urgent actions\, and speak with committee members about why these issues matter. \nWe’ll also show you how you can participate yourself.
