The TRU Students Union is the membership organization of students at TRU in Kamloops

Meet Senna Rock, a student who has been part of the Thompson Rivers University community since beginning her studies in the Bachelor of Communications program, majoring in Digital Journalism. In her first semester at TRU, Senna’s journey has already been shaped by community involvement, supportive relationships, and learning to persevere through moments of self-doubt. Along the way, the encouragement of important women in her life is her Mom who has played a key role in helping her feel supported, challenged, and confident as she navigates this new chapter. Through her experiences at TRU and beyond, Senna has developed a deeper understanding of confidence, purpose, and empowerment. She reflects on the pressures women often face in academic and professional spaces, particularly the expectation to constantly excel, while also recognizing the resilience women bring into those environments. Seeing workplaces become more inclusive has strengthened her sense of self and reinforced the importance of staying grounded in her values. For women at TRU who may be struggling with their own sense of identity, Senna encourages them to build connections with people who share their values, lean into community, and remain true to themselves, even when self-doubt creeps in. When asked to name a local organization that she has a special connection to, she named Kamloops BC SPCA, an organization dedicated to the care and welfare of animals in need of loving homes. Senna adopted her dog from a local shelter — a decision that took some convincing of her mom — and that dog has since become an important part of their family, offering comfort and connection while Senna is away studying. So, on behalf of Senna, the TRU Students’ Union will be making a donation to SPCA Kamloops at the upcoming Women of TRU Celebratory Lunch on Friday, March 07. #womenofTRU ... See MoreSee Less

Meet Angela Sangha, a long-standing member of the Thompson Rivers University community whose journey at TRU spans nearly three decades. Angela joined the university in 1995 as a student, earning her Bachelor of Tourism Management in 2001 before beginning her career at TRU. Over the years, she has held a variety of roles, including Orientation Coordinator, Recruitment Coordinator, Academic Advisor, and Arts Advisor. In November 2023, Angela stepped into her current role as Practicum Coordinator for the Master of Arts in Human Rights and Social Justice, where she supports students in securing meaningful practicum placements connected to human rights and social justice work. Throughout her life and career, Angela has been shaped by the women around her, particularly her mother and her daughter. Her mother’s resourcefulness, kindness, and generosity left a lasting impression, while her daughter’s compassion, drive, and leadership continue to inspire her. Angela also finds inspiration in her students, whose resilience and commitment to creating positive change reinforce the importance of the work she does. Through her long career at TRU, Angela’s sense of identity has been shaped by mentorship, teamwork, and the strength of working within a supportive, women-led environment. Her advice to women at TRU who may be struggling is to take time for themselves, seek out available supports, lean on one another, and remember that asking for help is a strength. Building community, even when it feels uncomfortable at first, can make a meaningful difference. When asked to name a local organization that holds personal meaning, Angela chose the Boys and Girls Club, an organization that supported her family during her children’s formative years and allowed her to continue working while knowing they were cared for. Recognizing the important role the organization plays for families in the community, Angela wanted to give back to a place that provided lasting support and meaningful memories. So, on behalf of Angela, the TRU Students’ Union will be making a donation to the Boys and Girls Club at the upcoming Women of TRU Celebratory Lunch. #womenoftru ... See MoreSee Less
