In November 2023, members of the Union’s Student Caucus participated in TRU’s inaugural uneven ground and lighting audits to provide feedback to the TRU Community Safety Council on the accessibility of our campus.
Student Caucus members walked around campus, noting various areas of concern regarding student safety, particularly focusing on dark, unlit areas and uneven pathways. The student voices offered valuable feedback on the common routes and access points to buildings, helping to prioritize changes for the safety needs of students and assisting TRU to effectively address the requests through its facilities department. Since the audit, TRU has been working to respond to the audit findings and has implemented several improvements while continuing to work on others.
One completed project is an upgrade to the path lighting around the House of Learning, exchanging some of the smaller lights and upgrading them to larger streetlights. Additionally, there will be similar upgrades to the lighting around the Campus Activity Center and Old Main commons.
“As the student representative on the TRU Community Safety Council, I brought up some areas of concern, particularly around HOL and campus commons. Some have since been addressed to ensure students and staff can commute between buildings in a safe manner”, said Kayla Hermiston, Community Safety Council representative.
The Union looks forward to continued changes to improve the campus lighting and accessibility with the results of future campus safety audits. To learn more about other Student Voices activities your representatives have been engaging in on your behalf, click here!
