Constitution & Bylaws

The Constitution and Bylaws define the foundation of the Students’ Union, outlining its purpose, structure, and governance. The Constitution establishes the Union’s core mission, while the Bylaws set the key principles for membership, decision-making, and the responsibilities of elected representatives.

Constitution

The Constitution is a short (usually one page) document that describes the Students’ Union’s reason for existing. The Society Act requires that it includes:

  • Aims of the organisation
  • Name of the Society
  • Clause to describe process of dissolution of the Society

Bylaws

The Bylaws are the codified principles of the Students’ Union. The Bylaws do not describe every single procedure, rather they are the significant principles and procedures such as:

  • Definition of membership
  • Who can vote at meetings
  • Decision making structures
  • Duties of elected representatives
