Write for Rights

This year, the TRUSU Equity Committee is joining millions around the world in Amnesty International’s Write for Rights Campaign — the largest global human rights campaign. Together, we take action by writing letters and signing petitions calling for justice, freedom, and dignity for people whose rights have been violated.

Through this campaign, ordinary people have helped free prisoners of conscience, stop torture, and bring hope to those fighting for their lives and communities. Your action matters.

If you are not able to attend our on-campus events, you can still participate online by learning about this year’s featured cases and signing petitions in support of each one below.

2025 Write for Rights Cases

Mother Nature Cambodia (Cambodia)

Six young environmental defenders — Chandaravuth Ly, Keoraksmey Phuon, Kunthea Long, Leanghy Yim, and Ratha Thun — were sentenced to up to eight years in prison for peacefully protecting Cambodia’s forests, rivers, and lakes from corporate and government destruction.

Demand the release of the five detained activists and the quashing of all convictions.

Guerreras por la Amazonía (Ecuador)

A group of young women aged 10 to 20 are fighting to protect the Amazon from oil extraction and toxic gas flares. Despite a court ruling in their favor, the flares continue to burn, harming their health and land.

Urge Ecuador to eliminate gas flares and ensure the safety of climate defenders.

Juan López (Honduras)

Environmental and spiritual leader Juan López was murdered in 2024 after years defending rivers and forests from harmful mining projects. His killers remain at large.
Call for a full, independent investigation to bring all perpetrators to justice.

Damisoa (Madagascar)

Forced to flee his home due to extreme drought, Damisoa now lives in dangerous and degrading conditions in a resettlement site. Families displaced by famine urgently need food, housing, and medical aid.
Call on Madagascar to ensure humanitarian support for displaced families.

Sai Zaw Thaike (Myanmar)

A photojournalist sentenced to 20 years in prison with hard labour after reporting on cyclone devastation. He has endured torture and solitary confinement simply for doing his job.
Urge Myanmar’s authorities to release him immediately and unconditionally.

Sign the Petition

Ellinor Guttorm Utsi (Norway)

An Indigenous Sámi leader protecting her people’s ancestral lands from massive wind-power projects that threaten reindeer herding and their way of life.
Call on Norway to protect Sámi land rights and uphold free, prior, and informed consent.

Unecebo Mboteni (South Africa)

Three-year-old Unecebo tragically died after falling into a pit toilet at his preschool — a preventable tragedy that highlights unequal access to safe sanitation and education.
Demand justice for Unecebo’s family and accountability from South African authorities.

Sonia Dahmani (Tunisia)

A lawyer and media commentator imprisoned for “spreading false news” after criticizing racism and prison conditions in Tunisia. She faces years in jail for exercising free expression.

About the Write for Rights Campaign

Write for Rights is an initiative by Amnesty International, a global movement of more than 10 million people who defend human rights worldwide. Every December, supporters across the world write letters and sign petitions on behalf of individuals and communities facing injustice. These collective actions lead to real change — freeing people, protecting defenders, and inspiring global solidarity.

This campaign is part of TRUSU’s Equity Solidarity Work Program, which supports the initiatives of organizations advancing global equity and justice.

Take a few minutes today to add your name and your voice to these petitions. Together, we can create a world where human rights are upheld for everyone, everywhere.
