Breaking Bread: Tariffs and How They Affect You

Breaking Bread

Do you flinch every time you see the total at the grocery checkout? Wonder why your favorite phone or sneakers suddenly cost way more or maybe aren’t on the shelf at all? Are you confused about how political spats between Ottawa, Washington, and Beijing can ripple all the way to your cafeteria tray? Whether you’re a bargain-hunter, a news junkie, or just trying to stretch a student budget, your perspective and your receipts matter here.

On Wednesday, December 17, 2025, from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm join the TRUSU Campaigns Committee and community stakeholders for a conversation on “Tariffs, Trade Wars & Your Wallet.” We’ll unpack how headline-grabbing tariff battles disrupt global supply chains and shape the price of everything from textbooks to take-out. Together, we’ll trace the journey of a dollar across borders and brainstorm ways to buffer our budgets against the next trade-war tweetstorm.

This discussion is part of the TRU Students’ Union Breaking Bread Series, which strives to connect small groups of students and community leaders to have lunch, share perspectives, foster connections, and build community and discuss contemporary issues.
