In the most recent Amnesty Urgent Action Letter addressed to Jean Sansan Kambile, the Minister of Justice and Human Rights, the TRU Students’ Union has called to quash the conviction of union leader Mr. Ghislain Duggary Assy, drop all charges against him, and uphold the right to strike in Côte d’Ivoire.
“The right to speak up and strike peacefully is a fundamental part of democracy. Suppressing these rights only deepens social division and weakens public trust in government institutions,” said Yunisha Bist, Racialized Persons Representative.
Mr. Assy, a teachers’ union leader, was convicted on April 3, 2025, and his two-year prison sentence was confirmed by the Abidjan Court of Appeal on July 16, 2025. His arrest followed a peaceful strike organized by the National Platform of Public Sector Organizations, where teachers called for fair working conditions and increased quarterly bonuses. Instead of engaging in dialogue, authorities declared the strike illegal, arrested several union leaders, and targeted Mr. Assy for his role in organizing the demonstrations. His prosecution represents a misuse of the justice system to silence labour activism and suppress legitimate demands for fair treatment.
The criminalization of union leaders in Côte d’Ivoire reflects a troubling pattern of restricting freedom of expression and association. When workers are punished for advocating for their rights, it sends a chilling message to all those who speak out against injustice. Upholding the right to strike is not only essential for protecting labour rights but also for ensuring that democratic participation and accountability remain strong in the country.
“We hope that our message adds to the global call for justice and respect for human rights,” said Bist. “People who stand up for fairness and equality should be protected, not punished.”
The Union awaits a response from the Ivoirian Minister of Justice and Human Rights.
