In the most recent Amnesty Urgent Action Letter, the union sent a formal letter addressed to His Excellency, President Luis Abinader, urging him to stop the mass deportation of over 10,000 Haitian citizens per week. In our letter, we demanded that the government follow international human rights migration policies and protect vulnerable communities. 

“Writing this letter is a vital act of advocacy that reflects our commitment as Canadians to protect human rights, urging international leaders to halt policies that tear families apart” says Equity Member at Large, Samantha Jo Haire. 

On October 4th, President Luis Abinader initiated a plan to deport up to 10,000 Haitians per week. Before this official announcement, the Dominican government had already deported 128,174 people by September 2024. With this policy now in effect, Haitian residents in the Dominican Republic risk losing access to essential services and face significant human rights concerns. 

 This policy reflects a broader disregard for international human rights standards. The mass deportations not only disrupt the lives of thousands but also highlight an urgent need for more humane migration policies. These actions underscore systemic challenges that must be addressed to ensure fair treatment for all. 

“I am deeply concerned by the impact of these deportations and believe swift action is necessary to resolve this issue” says Haire. 

 We urge President Luis Abinader to reconsider and reverse this harmful policy. It is our hope that immediate action will be taken to address this human rights violation and protect those affected by these deportations.
