The TRUSU Equity Committee is excited to host a Disability Inclusion and Awareness Training, that is free for anyone who wants to learn more about disability rights, improve accessibility in their role, or help advocate for greater inclusion. This vital training will be facilitated by experts from the Victoria Disability Resource Centre, who bring years of experience advocating for accessibility and inclusion in public spaces. Their work has been instrumental in helping organizations foster supportive environments for people with disabilities.
What this Training is About:
In this session, participants will explore the fundamentals of accessibility and inclusion, focusing on:
- Introduction to Disability: An overview of different types of disabilities, including physical, sensory, cognitive, and invisible disabilities, and their impact on individuals’ lives.
- Disability Etiquette: Guidelines and best practices for interacting with individuals with disabilities respectfully and inclusively, including appropriate language, communication strategies, and offering assistance.
- Stereotypes and Myths: Challenging common stereotypes, misconceptions, and myths surrounding disability, while promoting a more accurate and inclusive understanding.
- Recognizing Automatic and Unintentional Behaviours: Uncovering unconscious biases and microaggressions, and learning how to change these unintended behaviours to make positive changes toward inclusion.
- Effective Communication and Language: Learning strategies for effective and inclusive communication, including active listening, asking appropriate questions, and using inclusive language.
- Intersectionality: Understanding how disability intersects with other social identities such as race, gender, and sexuality, and recognizing the unique challenges faced by individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Resources and Support: Discovering local resources, support services, advocacy organizations, and assistive technologies that empower individuals with disabilities and promote inclusion.
