Story Teller's Gala
Story Teller's Gala
The TRUSU Aboriginal Collective was created in 2008/09 to provide an avenue in the Students’ Union to bring forward Aboriginal perspectives and address Aboriginal issues on campus. It serves as a recognition of the continued legacy of colonialism, residential schools, and the resulting gap in well-being for Aboriginal peoples. But it is also as a means to move forward, to close the gaps, and to achieve equity, understanding, and good will between all of Canada’s peoples. The Story Tellers’ Gala embodies these goals. We hope to introduce you to Aboriginal cultures and to open discussion on current issues. In particular, we will address issues of education, which offers one of the our most promising pathways. The Gala may be one short day, but it is a step in the right direction. One we hope you will take it with us. The Story Teller's Gala includes: Pine-Needle Basket Making Workshop - Carl ArchiePost-Secondary Student Support Program Worskshop - Cassandra Opikokew Complimentary LunchPreformances - Sage HillsKeynote Address -… Read More -

International Women's Day
For International Women's Day, the TRUSU Women's Collective will be screening "Miss Representation" in the Clock Tower Theatre on March 8 at 7pm. Admission is free. Miss Representation uncovers a glaring reality we live with every day but fail to see. Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself. In a society where media is the most persuasive force shaping cultural norms, the collective message that our young women and men overwhelmingly receive is that a woman’s value and power lie in her youth, beauty, and sexuality, and not in her capacity as a leader. While women have made great strides in leadership over the past few decades, the United States is still 90th in the world for women in national legisl… Read More
